Germany – Beer and the Beautiful Bavarian Alps

I spent 10 wonderful days in Germany’s Bavarian Alps. This consisted of a couple of days in Munich, 3 days in Berchtesgaden, and 4 days in Garmesh-Partenkirchen (Garmesh, for short). I started my trip in Munich because it was easier to pick up the rental car. Some people visit the Bavarian Alps via bus; however, I wanted the opportunity to spend more time in each location and a bus would prevent me from doing that.

One big mistake I made was not purchasing the additional car insurance to drive the rental car into Austria. I had no idea that Germany and Austria were so intertwined. Traveling to some sites would have been faster if I was able to drive into Austria to reach them.

When in Munich, watch the famous Glockenspiel. Link to clock chime times.
BMW Museum in Munich is a great place to visit
I tried a Radler (1/2 lemonade, 1/2 beer); I still prefer wine.
Herenchiemsee Palace is modeled after the Palace of Versailles in France
The view of the Alps from the Eagle’s Nest – Hitlers senior officers would strategize and invite dignitaries here.
Beautiful fall colors in Konigsee Lake
Centro Kafeebar is a great place for breakfast in Garmesh
View from Zugspitze – Germany’s tallest peak in the Alps
Germany’s famous Neuschwanstein Castle. Cinderella’s Castle is modeled after it

If you have the Bavarian Alps on your itinerary, here are my recommendations for travel, lodging, food, and what to do:

Transportation
  • Rental Car through SiXT (it is worth the additional insurance to drive into Austria)
  • Train from Munich Airport to Munich city – ticket is good for 24 hours
